THE CITY OF GREENBELT, MARYLAND
The City of Greenbelt is
a suburb of Washington, D.C., located within Prince George's County, one of
the largest and fastest growing counties in the country. Greenbelt is the intersecting point for four major highways, including the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Capital Beltway. As such, rapid access to much of the metropolitan area is available. A new station for the New York to Washington high speed Metroliner is located only two miles from the city. The
Greenbelt METRO station provides rapid rail transit to Washington
and is part of the METRO RAIL system. This
area is served by 3 major airports, 2 which are located less than 30 minutes from Greenbelt. Greenbelt residents enjoy, therefore, speedy
access to employment centers throughout the area. In addition,
a number of major employment centers, including the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA, the Department
of Agriculture Research Center and the University of Maryland are located just outside the city limits.The original housing of this planned community,
now operated by a cooperative, offers residents low-cost townhouse
living in a financial arrangement that offers the best features of
home ownership (your own home and yard with your monthly payments
becoming equity in you property) and the best features of renting
(heating, plumbing and structural maintenance performed by the cooperative). There
is a wide variety of housing located elsewhere in the city, but in
the vicinity of original Greenbelt.Cultural and recreational facilities are
extensive in Greenbelt. The city operates one of the finest small city recreation programs in the country. City
recreation facilities include 2 recreation centers, a community center,
an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, extensive
ball fields, 23 playgrounds, 190 acres of parkland (including scenic
Greenbelt Lake), an 1100 acre National Park (Greenbelt National Park) which Prince George's County provides
additional facilities including a quality school system from kindergarten
through junior college. A major County branch library is located in the center of town. The
many cultural and recreational facilities of the University of Maryland
and the cities of Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland
are easily accessible.
