SCHOOLS IN GREENBELT, MARYLAND

The City of Greenbelt is commited to its children and their education. Through the Advisory Committee on Education, the City keeps abreast of educational issuses and finds ways to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding students and educatiors. Greenbelt is proud to be the home of two nationally acclaimed "Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence," Greenbelt Elementary and Eleanor Roosevelt High School. In addition, all of Greenbelt's schools continue to strive for excellence through innovative programs and dedicated staff.

The City of Greenbelt is seved by the Prince George's County Public School System. There are also a few private programs available in the area.

Conveniently located in the Greenbelt Community Center, the Greenbelt Nursery School is a parent-cooperative preschool that offers NAEYC accredited programs for children 2, 3, and 4 years of age.

Greenbelt Elementary is a comprehensive school offering All-day Kindergarten, a Pre-K Program (held at the Greenbelt Children Learning Center), and Before and After Care for students living within our boundaries. We are also a School of Choice for Region II accepting transfers from designated non-performing schools in accordance with Federal No Child Left Behind Guidelines. Education at Greenbelt Elementary involves academic support programs such as Reading Recovery, Talented and Gifted in the Regular Classroom (TAG/TRC), Special Education and Inclusion, Accelerated Reader, Speech and Language, Science Fair, Reading Recovery, Write-A-Book Contest, and various student plays and musical productions. Other activities that enhance our school program include Student Patrols and Peer Mediation, Positive Discipline in the Classroom, OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring, University of Maryland and Eleanor Roosevelt High School student volunteers, GAB (Greenbelt Advisory Board) student government, Honor Roll incentives donated by various businesses, ACE Committee awards, ACE Reading Program, D.A.R.E. Program, Safeway and Giant Food receipt fundraising, and Greenbelt Elementary's Volunteer Program involving more than 100 adults from the community.

MAGNOLIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In the 1980's, Magnolia became Maryland's model school for the Talented and Gifted Program (TAG). During this time, Magnolia served as the training ground for TAG teachers throughout the entire state of Maryland.Most recently, Magnolia has expanded its role, once again to serve the multicultural needs of its community. Magnolia now serves as the cluster Elementary ESOL School for the Lanham and Greenbelt areas. Magnolia will continue to evolve and change to meet all the needs of its community.

At Springhill Lake Elementary School (SHL), our children begin in Head Start which is located off site. Kindergarten through the Sixth grade (returned fall 2002) are onsite.  We currently have 750 students. 

 Springhill Lake Elementary School is a comprehensive school that serves a culturally diverse community. As many as 70 different countries are represented. Our students range in grades from Kindergarten to grade 6.

Our program also includes students who are part of a regional diagnostic program for special education. The majority of our students live in a multi-family dwellings and are able to walk to school.

Located in Greenbelt, Maryland, in the heart of the Baltimore-Washington corridor, Eleanor Roosevelt High School is one of the largest public schools in Maryland with 2764 students and 137 faculty & staff.

Roosevelt was recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School in 1991 and 1998. Roosevelt was also recognized by the Department of Education as a New American High School in 1999-2000. Roosevelt has also been awarded the 2002-2003 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. In 2002 Eleanor Roosevelt was recognized as a National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C.

Roosevelt is also the Science and Technology Center for the northern part of Prince Georges County, and is a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology. NCSSSMST Roosevelt has classes ranging from Japanese I, Child Development, and Television Productions to Bio-Organic Chemistry, Calculus, and a variety of Technology Courses. Roosevelt boasts eight Foreign Languages, and has a media center with over 25,000 books.

A state-wide system of colleges with campuses withing the state and in other coutries. The College Park Campus is the main campus and is located within minutes of the City of Greenbelt.

Since 1958, Prince George’s Community College has been providing educational opportunities for students from Prince George’s County and around the world. Dr. Ronald A. Williams serves as the college’s seventh president. Under his leadership, the college has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan to become a world-class institution of higher education.

The college’s main campus is located in Largo, Maryland, with additional campuses in Hyattsville and Laurel. The college partners with Howard Community College to offer classes at the Laurel College Center. Each year nearly 40,000 students take part in more than 60 programs of study in a wide range of traditional and cutting-edge disciplines. With an average class size of 20, Prince George’s Community College provides students with an enriching, learning-centered environment in which to further their academic and professional careers.

The campus sits on 338.5 acres in Prince George’s County, Bowie, Maryland. There are 24 buildings providing more than 988,897 square feet of space. Tubman Hall, built in 1921, is the oldest building on campus. The Center for Learning Technology (CLT) is a state-of-the-art computer science and technology facility. Large parking lots are located throughout campus near major facilities such as the administration building, dorms, and the athletic field. The City of Bowie, which offers near by shopping, is 10 miles south of the Bowie State campus. In addition, the University is located between the metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington D.C. Both areas offer a multitude of recreational and entertainment activities Part of the University of Maryland system.

Capital College is the only independent college in Maryland dedicated to engineering, computer sciences, information technologies and business. Founded in 1927, Capitol College is a regionally accredited institution offering associate, bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as professional development training and certificates. The college's 52 acre campus is located in Laurel, Maryland, a suburban setting midway between Washington, DC and Baltimore. Full-time undergaduate students are eligible for a five-year tuition lock and a job guarantee.
