Friends of the Greenbelt Museum (FOGM), a non-profit organization, maintains an original 1937 residential unit as a house museum representing early Greenbelt. The Greenbelt Museum is a two story building of cinderblock construction. It sits on a rolling green of open space and walways, reflecting the harmony of housing and nature within the planned community. The Museum is located at 10-B Crescent Road welcomes visitors on Sundays, 1-5pm and by appointment. You may leave a message at 301-474-1936. PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY MEMORIAL LIBRARY Greenbelt Branch The Greenelt Branch Library, a part of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) since 1955, opened its doors in 1939 in two classrooms in Center School. The current building at 11 Crescent Road was opened in 1970. The collection includes books, magazines, newspapers, business reources, compact discs, books on tape, videos, and internet access. Customers can renew books over the telephone and from our website. The Children's Department schedules weekly story times. Adult Services offers a monthly Book Discussion and a monthly Poetry Workshop. Special programs are offered throughout the year. The Branch participates in a summer reading program for children and teens. The Tugwell Room, a special reference collection on city/urban planning, cooperatives, greenbelt towns and the City of Greenbelt history, is a resource for students, visiting planners and community members. The Friends of the Greenbelt Library, a volunteer organization, manages the Novel Endings Book Store, supports library programs, raises funds for branch projects and equipment and serves as advocates for the library. HISTORIC CEMETERIES IN GREENBELT
The Hamilton Cemetery Located at the end of Hamilton Place, it is marked with a display case holding the remains of the marble headstones from that site. The headstones date back to the early 1800's and include those of John Hamilton, who patented 240 acres of the land that is now included in Greenbelt; his wife, Jane; their son Colonel Samuel Hamilton who served in the Maryland House of Delegates and two of his wives. The Walker Cemetery Located behind the business area now known as the "Golden Triangle." It is thought to be the resting place of some of the descendents of the Walker family, early settlers of Grenbelt who had participated in the rebellion against George I. One of the descendents of thes family was Samuel Hamilton Walker who became the celebrated Captain Walker of Texas Ranger and Mexican war fame. The Turner Cemetery Located just off of Kenilworth Avenue on Cherrywood Lane. Shadrick Turner purchased a 125 acre farm in this area in 1864 which was know as Wild Cat. Wtih his wife, Sarah, he was known to be a zealous layman in founding Methodism in this part of Maryland. The Turner Cemetery has been expanded and is now part of the Greenbelt Cemetery, which is still in use today. BELTSVILLE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER VISITORS CENTER Information & Directions
When in the Washington, D.C. area you may want to arrange for a guided tour of ARS research as it is represented at the 7,000-acre Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. Beltsville is the largest and most prominent of ARS 100-plus sites. It is a dynamic, highly diversified research facility, dating back to livestock experiments in 1910. While visiting, you might also ask about agricultural research in your home state. A trip to the ARS Visitor Center will provide guests a broad picture of agricultural research in America. The Center also plays a major ambassadorial role. Each of the foreign embassies in Washington, D.C. handles requests from official visitors to meet with or visit with ARS scientists, particularly at Beltsville. There are many cooperative research agreements between ARS scientists and those of other nations. Our laboratories also employ visiting foreign scientists. The College Park Aviation Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is located on the grounds of the world's oldest continuously operating airport in College Park, MD. Visitors to the museum step into an open 1½ story exhibit space, which highlights the display of unique aircraft and tells the story of flight from the Wright Brothers to today. The museum gallery contains historic and reproduction aircraft associated with the history of the airfield, as well as hands-on activities and experimentation areas for children of all ages.
