Teachers,
The Book-It Television Programs feature students from Greenbelt sharing their creative reading and writing related work. Here are a few examples of what teachers have done in the past:
- Book Review: Students read a book of their choice (or a book for an assignment) and write a brief review
- Artwork: Students read a book of their choice (or a book for an assignment) and create artwork based on that book.
- Creative Writing: Students write original poetry, stories, comics, jokes, or articles.
- Board games: Students create a board game based on a book they have read.
- Commercials: Students write and perform commercials for books they have read, their school, the City of Greenbelt , or various other topics that interest them.
- Other: Projects or activities as designed by the teacher.
TAPING SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Taping sessions generally last between 1 - 1 ½ hours and take place in an empty classroom or the media center. Initially, two to four students will be pulled out of class to tape. As students complete their taping segments they will be sent back to class in pairs, at which time another two students should be sent to the taping room. Each student usually takes no more then 5 minutes to tape, however it can take as much as 10 minutes if the student is very young, nervous, or has difficulty reading. In all, the student will miss between 10-15 minutes of class time if there are no delays.
TAPING GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
. No more than 12 students per classroom will be taped for one project; it will be the teacher's responsibility to select students for each subsequent taping through a selection process that works best for their individual classroom. The limit is imposed because of time constraints.
. Teachers are encouraged to select only those students who are truly excited about the book that they have read.
. Students of varying reading levels are encouraged to participate; excitement is what counts!
. We are more than happy to schedule multiple tapings for your classroom or grade level throughout the year, as long as each taping has a different project.
. Tapings occur in an empty classroom, the media center, or a conference room. It is the responsibility of the teacher to arrange for a taping location.
. Teachers should provide the ACE Reading Club with a list of students, book titles, and authors at least two days prior to the taping if at all possible. This helps make the taping go much smoother and quicker.
. No student will be taped without a signed registration form.
TEACHERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FOLLOWING:
. Distributing and collection of student registration forms.
. Submitting a taping list at least two days prior to the taping (via fax, mail, or email) that includes the students' names, book titles, and authors for book reviews, or the students' names and project titles for creative writing or other reading projects. *Unless other arrangements are made in advance.
. Acquiring a taping location such as the media center, empty classroom, empty conference room, or other quiet space.
