General Animal Control and Shelter Operation Information

The Animal Control Division prides itself on being ethical and humane in its treatment of animals including providing positive reinforcement training techniques. The City of Greenbelt uses two Veterinarian practices to assist us in providing care and treatment of animals.Greenbelt Animal Control operates a “no kill” organization. Every effort is made to place adoptable animals with appropriate adoptive homes.Viewing of adoptable animals can be done anytime by appointment, or during regular shelter hours.

Adoption Rules

  • All animals that are adopted will be spayed or neutered if they are over 6 months old.
  • All animals are given age appropriate vaccinations and immunizations.
  • Animals recieve medical treatment as appropriate. Every effort is made to identify and disclose all pre-existing medical and behavioral conditions prior to adoption.

Trap/Neuter/Release Program

A TNR program has been established to adress problems associated with the free-roaming/feral cat population. Free roaming/feral cats contribute significantly to the population of homeless cats. These cats overburden animal shelters everywyhere, and lacking available adoptive homes, are often euthanized. A TNR program attempts to adress this problem by trapping free-roaming cats, neutering/spaying the cats, vaccinating the cat, and releasing the cat to a managed colony.Similar TNR programs operated in the jurisdictions have been very successful in reducing the number of cat births. For more information on Greenbelt Animal Controls TNR program call 301-474-6124, or contact Animal Control Officer Susie Root or Lauren Denise.
