The Greenbelt Museum is turning 20! All friends and neighbors are invited to join the party at the next Artful Afternoon on Sunday, October 7, from 1-5pm. This month's event will be a swinging celebration of art and culture of the 1930s and 40s and the history of Greenbelt. Visit the Community Center at 15 Crescent Road for live music, dancing, an exhibit reception, hands-on arts, oral histories and more -- all free!

From 3-5pm, the Community Center gym will be transformed into a dance hall for a live performance by the 16-piece Big Band Tradition. Hailing from Silver Spring, Maryland, this large group boasts an equally expansive repertoire with selections from Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich and even the New Swing of Brian Setzer. The Band has also been known to throw in a few original compositions to round out the mix.

Stretch your legs before the big dance with a walking tour provided by the Greenbelt Museum. This forty-five-minute guided tour will depart from the Community Center at 2:15pm and visit sites including Roosevelt Center, inner walkways, underpasses and the museum’s historic home. The tour provides a great introduction to Greenbelt for new visitors, and also promises to better acquaint residents with the City that we love. Visitors with limited mobility or requiring special assistance are encouraged to contact curator Jill St. John in advance of the event at 301-507-6582.

From 1- 4pm, join Artist in Residence Mary Gawlik to create your own commemorative art tile. Learn about the beloved friezes by artist Lenore Thomas that adorn the front of the Community Center, and then let your imagination be your guide! Advance registration is not required, and no prior experience with ceramics or tile making is needed. Tiles will be fired and made available for pick up at a later date.

From 1-3pm, celebrate the opening of a new exhibit of Greenbelt Museum artifacts in the Community Center Art Gallery. The show Recent Relics includes many hands-on displays and emphasizes the work that museums do in solving the riddles posed by mysterious artifacts of a by-gone era. See how many objects you can correctly identify! Hear from the curators when the Greenbelt Museum provides a short gallery talk at 1:30pm. The exhibit will remain on display through November 25. The Gallery is open from 9am to 10 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 7pm on Sunday, whenever the room is not reserved. To confirm access, call 301-397-2208.

Every Greenbelter has a story to tell, and this could be your chance to get that story on the record! Archivist Joe Harris will be coordinating video-recorded oral histories from 1-5pm. Greenbelters of all eras are welcome to participate, and a special invitation is extended to long-time residents. Advance appointments are recommended although walk-ins will be accommodated as the schedule permits. Contact Nicole DeWald at 240-542-2057 before October 4th to make an appointment.

Additional activities continuing from 1-5pm include open studios with the 10 Artists in Residence at the Greenbelt Community Center. See paintings, collages, sculptures, fiber arts, tiles, pottery and more, with much of the artwork available for purchase. Guests can visit the Greenbelt Museum's new, ongoing exhibition Sublime on a Dime: Fashions from the Great Depression to World War II at the Greenbelt Community Center. Visitors can also tour the Museum's historic home located just across the street at 10-B Crescent Road. The Museum house is a restored international style home featuring furniture designed by the federal government for the original Greenbelt homes along with other artifacts illuminating everyday, middle-class life of the 1930's and 40's. Guided tours of the home will be available free of charge for this special occasion.
