MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
held Wednesday, September 9,
for the purpose of meeting with Paul Sanchez.
The meeting began at 8:00 p.m. It was held in the Conference Room of the Municipal Building.
PRESENT WERE: Council members Edward V.J. Putens, Rodney M. Roberts, Alan Turnbull Thomas X. White and Mayor Judith F. Davis.
STAFF PRESENT WERE: Michael P. McLaughlin, City Manager and David E. Moran, City Clerk
ALSO PRESENT WERE: Paul Sanchez, owner of P & G Theaters and Altoria Ross, Greenbelt News Review.
Mr. Sanchez reported that he had not heard directly from Mr. Christacos about any plans for the theater space. He noted that he was not 5 months behind in the rent, however he had held back some rent because of a problem with Pleasant Touch using the theater=s water.
Council discussed possible city ownership of the theater. When asked about future plans, Mr. Sanchez indicated that he probably wouldn't stay past December. He indicated that he would need to get about $20,000 per year in order to continue to operate the theater.
Mr. Turnbull suggested that the city pursue installation of a sign on Southway. Mr. Turnbull expressed concern about Mr. Sanchez pulling out and taking all his equipment with him. Mr. Sanchez agreed to give the city 30 days notice before he would leave the theater.
Council discussed different ways to help save the theater. Mr. Sanchez noted that there was a Theater Historical Society who may be able to help. Council also suggested placing information on the web site and maybe contacting the Art-Deco Society.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:06 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
David E. Moran
