WORK SESSION OF THE GREENBELT CITY COUNCIL, held Wednesday, May 26, 2004, for the purpose of holding a stakeholder meeting with the Roosevelt Center merchants.

Mayor Davis called the meeting to order at 8:05 p.m. It was held in the Multipurpose Room of the Community Center.

PRESENT were Mayor Judith Davis, Mayor pro tem Rodney Roberts, and Councilmembers Konrad Herling, Leta Mach and Edward Putens.

ALSO PRESENT were Michael McLaughlin, City Manager; Kristen Ward, Community Planner; Dorrie Bates and Bob Davis from the Greenbelt Coop; Ellen Siegel and Richard McMullen of the New Deal Café; Cindy Comproni of the Greenbelt Federal Credit Union; Barbara Simon of GAVA/GATE; Gwen Vaccaro of Pleasant Touch; Sheldon Goldberg; and Eileen Peterson.

Mayor Davis welcomed everyone in attendance. Gwen Vaccaro presented comments from the Roosevelt Center Task Force including a status report on the action items from the market study done for the City a year ago.

Security concerns comprised a good deal of the discussion. It was noted that in addition to police officers, community development inspectors also patrol the Roosevelt Center for the City. A concern was expressed about drinking of alcohol in the Center. It was noted that while there has been response to calls for service, there was a feeling that it could be quicker and that more enforcement was desirable. These concerns would be passed along to the Police Department.

Barbara Simon, speaking on behalf of the Greenbelt Association for the Visual Arts and Greenbelt Access Television (GAVA/GATE), urged Council to remember about getting appropriate equipment to be able to show various types of media at the theater. Specific mention was made of a projector to show videos such as those produced by GAVA.

There was discussion about signage to promote events at the Center. The practice that is used in the issuance of permitting signage on City property for public events was also discussed. Mr. McMullen urged that there be more and bigger signage or attention getting people to the Roosevelt Center.

Mayor Davis thanked everyone for attending. The meeting was adjourned at 10:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael McLaughlin

City Manager
