WORK SESSION OF THE GREENBELT CITY COUNCIL
held Wednesday, March 23, 2005, for the purpose of holding a stakeholder meeting with Greenway Center.

Mayor pro tem Roberts called the meeting to order at 8:05 p.m. in the Community Center.

PRESENT WERE: Mayor pro tem Rodney Roberts and Councilmembers Konrad Herling, Leta Mach and Edward Putens.

STAFF PRESENT WERE: Willie Davis, Community Development Inspector, and Michael McLaughlin, City Manager.

ALSO PRESENT WERE: Steve Halley and Eric Fenner, Combined Properties; Sheldon Goldberg; Greenbelt East Advisory Committee; Virginia Beauchamp, Greenbelt News Review.

Mayor pro tem Roberts noted this meeting was a stakeholder meeting with representatives of Greenway Center. Mr. Halley advised that Greenway Center was doing well. A new day spa, Blush, was signed to fill the one vacancy in the near future. He believes Greenway Center has a viable and attractive retail mix with Safeway, Old Navy and Modell’s. They have recently upgraded their security with the hiring of off-duty Greenbelt police officers. They were pleased with the arrangement and were very complimentary about their relationship with Sergeant Carl Schinner, who handles the scheduling.

Mr. Fenner advised Combined Properties is continuing with the paving upgrade plan for the center. The area in front of Safeway is scheduled in 2005, the area to the side and behind Safeway is set for 2006, and landscaping improvements will be made in 2007.

Mr. Putens asked them to check that there are the proper number of handicapped spaces, and they said they would. It was also noted that traffic markings are needed at the main entrance. This area was recently resurfaced and new markings had not been put down yet.

It was noted that there are numerous code violations for businesses in the Center. Mr. Davis indicated these are mostly access and clearance issues in the stores and the responsibility of the tenant. However, Mr. Halley asked that Combined Properties be sent a copy of the initial violation. As the property owner, they are notified if a tenant does not correct a problem. Mr. Halley said that if they were advised when the citation was first issued, they could be part of the solution.

In closing, Mr. Halley indicated that Greenway Center was doing well and they were happy to be in Greenbelt.

The meeting adjourned at 9:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael McLaughlin

City Manager
