Q: My child is just a few months away from the age minimum date, can I sign them up anyway?
A: Each dance class has a curriculum that is age specific, down to the month. Just like school, your child should be the minimum age of the class at the BEGINNING of the school year, to have an age appropriate experience. If your child is too young for the class, you are putting unnecessary stress on your child. Think of dance class just like school; there is a progressive curriculum throughout the school year. Otherwise class would just be a drop-in free-for-all. Also, class spaces are limited and fill up quickly so children who are the appropriate age might not get a space in class.
Q: Why can't I sit inside the classroom and watch my child's class every day?
A: Three important reasons:
1-SAFETY! We have no way to control whether NON dance studio-related people will wander in if the studio has an open door policy during class,. Typically the instructor will close the door ten minutes into class time. Student are not allowed in if they are more than ten minutes late.
2-DISTRACTIONS! Children behave differently with parents watching. Students will usually be self-conscious, or use negative attention-getting behavior if you are talking to other parents, or sometimes parents talk on their cell phones, wander in and out of the room, etc. To accomplish any dance skill, kids need to have a high level of concentration. You can watch and take pictures on the last class day of each session during “Visitor’s Week.” By then we have prepared the students for an audience.
3-RESPECT FOR THE TEACHER! Many parents (not you, of course!) have a tendency to coach from the sidelines. Many students will go visit with their parents if they know they are present in the room. There is no confusion when the instructor is the only authoritative voice in the studio.
Q: I missed the registration deadline. If there is room in the class can I still sign up?A: We have made exceptions in the past, but we will be stricter about this rule in the future. Signing up late DOUBLES the work for the administrators and instructor, and causes stress and confusion for all. Also, if we do not know your child is coming, we may have to cancel that class due to low enrollment. We cannot create a great program for your child without planning ahead, so please do your best to plan ahead.
