The City of Greenbelt elects a new council every two years. Any resident of Greenbelt who is a qualified, register voter is eligible to run for election. Potential Council Members must file with the city clerk. The City Council consists of seven members who are elected at large. The members of the City Council choose the mayor and the mayor pro tem. The member who received the most votes in the election is customarily chosen as mayor, with the member receiving the second highest number of votes usually becoming the mayor pro tem. The mayor pro tem assumes the duties of the mayor when he/she is not available.
