The City of Greenbelt continuously accepts applications for the position of Police Officer. Prior to the scheduling of each testing process, vacancy notices are advertised throughout the area. All applicants with current applications on file are notified of the testing dates prior to the start of the process.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
To qualify as a Police Officer Candidate, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must have reached age 21 at the time of certification as a Police Officer
- Must have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent (higher degree preferred)
- Must possess or be able to acquire a valid driver’s
- Must submit to and pass a written test, physical agility examination and an oral interview PREPARING FOR PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING
PHYSICAL AGILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Must successfully complete a thorough background investigation
- Must never have committed, been involved in or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
- Must be certified physically fit to perform the duties of a police officer
- Must be certified through a licensed mental health care professional to determine whether the candidate is emotionally and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
- Must have vision which is correctable to 20/20, not to exceed 20/100 uncorrected, or must use extended wear contact lenses
- Must not be color blind
- Must be able to meet the physical demands required to perform the duties of a police officer
- Must be willing to submit to a polygraph examination and drug screen as part of the background investigation
- Must meet the prior drug usage policy as mandated by the State of Maryland, to wit:
No lifetime use or ingestion is allowed for:
- Heroin
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
- Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)

Police Officer Application Process :
The selection process utilized by the Greenbelt Police Department is thorough and complete. The reason for this is to ensure the best qualified candidates are selected. The following are the components of the selection process. These must be completed by every applicant. The approximate amount of time required for each segment is also indicated. Depending on the number of applicants, vacancy status and the individual applicants themselves, the entire process could take up to four months to complete. APPLICATION

Training and Career Development
ENTRY LEVEL TRAINING:
The Greenbelt Police Department does not administer its own police academy. New recruits receive their entry level training through local training academies that meet the requirements of the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. The academy requires a commitment of approximately six month’s. Applicants attending an academy must be willing to obligate themselves minimally to a two-year commitment to work for the City.
DUTY ASSIGNMENT:
Once a recruit has satisfactorily completed a police academy, he or she will be promoted to the rank of Police Officer. The recruit is then assigned to a field training position, which generally lasts approximately 14 weeks in duration. The probationary period for an entry level Police Officer is one year.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Police work involves considerable personal risk and requires the ability to immediately respond to emergency situations utilizing sound judgment. Duties and responsibilities of police officers include, but are not limited to:
- Working rotating shifts
- Being called back to duty when emergency situations are declared
- Patrolling a designated area within the City in order to prevent crime, discover criminal activity and arrest law violators
- Working with the community to solve neighborhood problems
- Directing traffic
- Enforcing motor vehicle laws
- Conducting preliminary investigations of crimes and protecting crime scenes
- Testifying in a court of law

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES :
Promotions are earned on the basis of various testing processes. A Police Officer Candidate automatically earns his or her promotion to the rank of Police Officer upon the satisfactory completion of an approved police academy. A promotion to the rank of Police Officer First Class (PFC) can be earned after two years served as an entry level Police Officer. Candidates compete for higher ranking supervisory positions.

OVERTIME PAY: Time and one half the employee’s hourly rate is paid for work in excess of 40 hours per week. A minimum of 3 hours overtime is paid when the employee is required to appear in court while off duty. When required to work on holidays, the overtime rate is one and one half times the basic rate of pay in addition to the holiday. Employees may opt to earn comp. time with limitations.
EQUIPMENT: Initial issue and replacement of uniforms and equipment are fully furnished to Police Officers by the Department, to include maintenance and laundry.
ANNUAL LEAVE: Annual Leave ranges from 13 to 26 days per year based on tenure – maximum annual accumulation of 240 hours. Annual leave is accrued during the probationary period but is not credited to the employee until after the permanent appointment is received.
HOLIDAYS: There are eleven (11) paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: There are thirteen (13) sick days provided per year, unlimited accumulation.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE : Administrative leave is provided for professional development.
GROUP LIFE INSURANCE : The City provides Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance in the amount of $25,000, plus the option to purchase additional for self, spouse and children.
GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE : The City pays 85% contribution for Health Insurance (HMO/OPEN ACCESS/PPO). Contribution is based on Open Access rates.
DENTAL PLAN: The City pays 2/3 of dental coverage premiums.
RETIREMENT: Maryland State Retirement and Pension System – Law Enforcement Officers Pension System(LEOPS) Minimum - 25 years Service or age 50
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN : 401(a) 2.5% contribution from City plus optional 457(b) with up to 2.5% match by the City.
SOCIAL SECURITY: Social Security is provided in addition to retirement.
RETIREMENT HEALTH SAVINGS (RHS) PLAN: Participating employees receive a 1% Contribution re-directed from the 401(a) contribution from the City.
TAKE HOME VEHICLES: Employees are eligible for take-home vehicles with limitations after completion of probationary period
FITNESS PROGRAM: Award up to $400 per year
NIGHT DIFFERENTIAL: $1.35/per hour
ON-CALL PAY: $5.00/day
RESIDENCY BONUS: $3,000 per year for Police Officers who live in the City of Greenbelt
GREENBELT HOME OWNERSHIP GRANT: $2,000 toward purchase of home in the City of Greenbelt
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Employees removed from probationary status are eligible to receive tuition reimbursement with limitations
