Greenbelt, Maryland 20770
Dr. Sacoby Wilson will discuss environmental justice, in Prince George's County and the nation, at a free event to be held Saturday, August 24 from 3 to 5 pm at the Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Road, Greenbelt MD, room 202. Dr. Wilson is director of the Program on Community Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health (CEEJH) at the School of Public Health, University of Maryland-College Park. He will outline racial and economic disparities in health impacts of environmental problems and present the CEEJH 2018 report "Prince George's County Environmental Justice Plan 2025." The plan proposes solutions for local underserved communities bearing the brunt of environmental degradation. Its priority areas are lead, water quality, food security, cumulative impacts, and zoning and equitable development. Audience discussion will follow.
Several groups are sponsoring the event: Prince George's County Peace & Justice Coalition, Greenbelt Climate Action Network, Greenbelt Racial Equity Alliance and Prince George's Sierra Club Group. Their goal is to give many more county residents an opportunity to learn and share ways they can help advance environmental justice, here and now.
For two years Dr. Wilson through CEEJH has been developing connections of impacted communities, advocacy groups and policymakers in Maryland and the Washington, DC region. His talk will include this work. Dr. Wilson is also an associate professor with the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health (MIAEH) and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, University of Maryland-College Park.
