Hurricane Ready: What to Do When the Power Goes Out

Can you survive three weeks or more in your house without power and running water?

Imagine a natural disaster like a hurricane devastated your neighborhood and knocked out public utilities. Many people would rather stay in their house than seek refuge at a public shelter, especially during these COVID-19 times. This free, online presentation via Zoom will teach you how you can stay at home without the benefit of public utilities.

Join us in this webinar to learn how to get by, when the electrical grid is down, using common household items. In addition, learn which items you can stock up on now to make your life easier if the power went down for an extended period of time.

These sound, scalable solutions are available based on knowledge and experience from disaster response agencies around the world, public health officials, boaters, campers, hikers, hunters, RVers, and nurses.

Learn how to

- safely shelter in place without utilities

- practice emergency sanitation and hygiene for you and members of your household

- make emergency toilets

- create safe, effective, practical, and affordable ways to get clean water to prepare a cup of hot coffee; make an easy, nutritious meal; and wash up

- adapt strategies for people who are pregnant, recovering from surgery, have health complications, or unsteady on their feet

This training includes practical applications for individual households, shelter workers, first responders, and search-and-rescue teams in the field. A list of materials and where to buy them will be sent to all participants after the webinar.

SPEAKER: Jonathan Hutson is the Public Information Officer for Anne Arundel-Annapolis CERT. Hutson chairs the Communications Committee; liaises with government agencies and nonprofit organizations as appropriate; designs and manages the website,; and handles the Twitter feed (@AAACERT).

We look forward to seeing you on the zoom call. Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions for future presentations.
