Public Works Snow Update, Wednesday, February 20 at 4:00pm 

·         Plow/salt trucks are wrapping up.

·         Sidewalk crews are still working on Priority 2 areas – they should be completed within the next couple of hours.

·         NOTE:  standard operating procedures are in effect to address any re-freeze issues during the evening.


Weather Status Update, Wednesday, February 20 at 10:15am

City offices and recreational facilities are Closed. CARES family counseling for tonight is cancelled.  The Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting that was to be held tonight has been rescheduled to next week, Wednesday, February 27.  

Public Works Snow Crews are out:  

  • Salting/pre-treating of roads began early this morning.
  • Sidewalk crews are on site and have been deployed/focused on Priority 1 areas.
  • Plowing operations have also started and will continue for the foreseeable future.

 

 


 

 

Weather Status Update, Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30pm

At this time, Greenbelt City Offices are scheduled to open 2 hours late with liberal leave. Recreational Facilities will open at 10:30am.  Public Works is expected to collect Refuse and Recycling   Please bring your cans to the curb.  GHI should have a clear path to their receptacles.   There will be a Snow Day Movie at 11am at the Greenbelt Theater schools are closed tomorrow   The movie will be Paddington 2. Please call the Greenbelt Recreation weather hotline at 301-474-0646 for updates/status on classes and facilities. 

 


 

Weather Status Update, Tuesday,  February 19 at 11:30AM:  

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM TO 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY

Snow will overspread the area early Wednesday morning and mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain during the late morning and early afternoon hours Wednesday. Precipitation will change to plain rain Wednesday evening. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.


Weather Status Update, Friday,  February 1 at 10:30AM:  

All Public Works crews are currently working on Priority 1 snow removal. The roads have been salted and are passable. Plowing at this time is not indicated. Sidewalk crews are working on clearing the sidewalks at all city facilities.

 Weather Status Update, Wednesday, January 30 at 7:35PM:  

Current temperatures are already in the lower teens. Temperatures have dropped fast throughout the area. Temperatures will be dropping as low a 6 degrees tonight with wind chills below zero degrees.

Dress Warmly and stay inside if possible. The cold wind chills could result in Hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite also can occur if precautions are not taken.

Make sure also pets are brought inside and NOT left outside in the cold.

 Greenbelt City offices and Recreational facilities will open at 10:30am.  For the status of your recreational class or activity, please check the weather hotline at 301-474-0646. There will be refuse and recycling pick-up.  Please make sure there is a clear path to your bins.  

Please stay warm. If you need to come inside to warm up, all city buildings are available. City Offices and Facilities will close at 3:00pm today.  Please stay safe.  If you need a warming center please visit  https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/802/Warming-Centers  The closest centers are at The Langely Park Community Center, 1500 Merrimac Drive, Hyattsville, and Kentland Community Center, 2413 Pinebrook Avenue, Landover.

The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting and the GreenACES meeting are both cancelled for this evening. 

Please, if there is snow, make sure you have a clear pathway to your refuse and recycling containers tomorrow for collection.

The weather tonight and tomorrow is expected to get very cold.  There may be a chance for snow.  Please, if you need to get warm, remember that you may enter any city facility. There has been a Code Orange advisory for Prince George's County today resulting in schools to be delayed 2 hours. The Langely Park Community Center, 1500 Merrimac Drive, Hyattsville, and Kentland Community Center, 2413 Pinebrook Avenue, Landover, are open as Warming Centers. Please visit https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/802/Warming-Centers for other locations and more information on warming centers throughout the county! To stay out of the cold you are also welcome to come into all City facilities to warm up!

 


 

Weather Update January 18 at 10:00am:

There is still the slight threat for a winter storm Saturday, Saturday night and a brief period of wintry precipitation is possible Sunday. If this threat materializes, it may cause travel disruptions. Saturday expect rain and snow after 10AM, becoming all rain after 4PM and highs in the 40’s. Sunday expect clouds, rain, snow, and sleet likely before 1PM, then a chance of snow between 1PM and 4PM, and highs in the 40s. Sunday expect gale force winds over the waters Sunday afternoon, possible blustery night time winds, with a low around 10. Bitterly cold wind chills are likely Sunday night into Monday morning. Wind chills below zero are possible during this time.

 


 

Snow update Sunday, January 13 at 11:59pm:

City offices and recreational facilities will open at 10:30 am on Monday, December 14th   Refuse & recycling will be picked up on time.  

 


 

PSnow Update Sunday, January 13 at 7:00 pm

Greenbelt City Government is planning to be open on time Monday, January 14, with liberal leave for employees.  If that status changes we will post it here. 

Trash & recycling will be picked up. Plowing continues in neighborhoods as the snow subsides. Main thoroughfares have all been cleared. 

Schools are closed, as is the Federal Government. Slow down and enjoy our town! Go sledding, build a snowman, go enjoy the snow day movie! If you must drive, please be cautious and avoid icy conditions. 

The Aquatic & Fitness Center will open late. At this time, it is expected to open at 10am, but it could change. The Community Center should open on time. Please check the Recreation Weather hotline at 301-474-0646 for updates, and to make sure your class or activity is being held. Updated information will also be posted here and at www.greenbeltmd.gov.

Recreational Facilities Update:
Because of dropping temperatures, icing and staff getting home safe, we will be closing all Recreation Department facilities at 7 p.m. tonight (GAFC, GCC, SHLRC and YC).
All facilities are expected to open on time tomorrow.

1:30 pm Snow Update

Road Condition Update

Roads are clear and passable.  Plowing has ceased for the moment (hopefully for the evening)  We are still fully staffed and will be that way till at least 6pm.  We will reassess conditions and staffing around 6pm.  I  would like to have everyone out of here at 9pm, assuming the weather cooperates.

Sidewalks

Crews are working on Priority 1, 2 and 3 areas now.  Things are going really well.  We will be sending some employees home at 6pm and keeping some to handle Roosevelt Center and Facilities.

Greenbelt Connection

Service will resume tomorrow. 

Trash and Recycling

Trash and Recycling is still on schedule for tomorrow.

Road Condition Update
Road conditions continue to be passable but slick. Plows are continually removing snow and all equipment is functional.

Sidewalks

Greenbelt Connection
The Greenbelt Connection will not be running today. It will resume service tomorrow.

Snow update Sunday, January 13 at 6am
Recreational Facilities:
Due to safety concerns for staff and the forecast of continued snow throughout the morning, we will open the GAFC at 12 NOON today. 

The YC  and the SHLRC will open as originally scheduled at 1 p.m.

At this time the CC is still expected to open as scheduled (9:00 a.m.) however that may change.

 


 

January 12, 11:00 pm update

11:00 pm Snow Update

Road Condition Update

At approximately 10:20pm we transitioned from treating roadways to snow removal.  All snow plow trucks are in operation at this time.  Roads are passable but slick throughout town, this will improve over the next hour.  The storm predictors are still calling for 4-8 inches of snow at this time.  We will continue to push snow throughout the night.

Sidewalk Condition Update

Tonight we had a skeleton crew working on sidewalks at Roosevelt Center and City Facilities.  All our employees that worked tonight were sent home at 10:30pm, with the exception of one.   The one remaining employee is working at Roosevelt Center and will be leaving in a hour.

Tomorrow morning we will have all available members of the sidewalk and snow removal crew in at 5:30am.  We will be working on Priority 1 areas including City Facilities. 

 

Greenbelt Connection

At this time the plan is to run the service tomorrow.  We will provide an update in the morning

 Recreational Facilities

At this point we are planning to open the GAFC at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow as scheduled. We will monitor conditions as we can and make a final determination tomorrow morning around 6 or 6:30 a.m. on any schedule adjustments. 

The Community Center is scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.  We have staff available to open as well.

Youth Center and Springhill Lake Recreation Center are scheduled to open at 1 p.m. tomorrowand we do not anticipate any issues with opening as scheduled at this time.
