GAFC Rules and Regulations

The following rules and regulations have been established for the benefit of all users of the Aquatic and Fitness Center to ensure the safe operation of the facility. All patrons agree to observe these rules and to obey the instructions of the GAFC staff. Patrons violating rules are subject to the revocation of their privileges.

The Recreation Department reserves the right to refuse admittance into the facility the instant capacity of the pool has been reached or when otherwise deemed necessary for the health, welfare, or safety of its patrons.

The Recreation Aquatic Coordinator or his/her designated assistant (Pool Manager) are responsible for the operation of the pools. Their instruction must be followed at all times. Should disagreement arise, patrons are advised to contact the Aquatic Supervisor.


  1. All persons use the pools and Fitness Center at their own risk.

  2. No one will be allowed in the swimming area unless the pool is officially open and a lifeguard is on duty. Entry upon the pool premises when it is not open for public use is punishable by fines or imprisonment or both.

  3. Admission fees must be paid by non-pass-holders (children 1 year and older) upon each entry to the pool facility. Residents will be asked to show proof of residency (driver’s license, lease or mortgage papers).

  4. During the summer season, the facility restricts entrance to pass-holders, residents and their guests on weekends and holidays. (Limit of three guests; pass-holders and residents must sign them in, remain in the facility with them and are responsible for them at all times).

  5. Refunds are not given under any circumstance. This specifically includes, but is not limited to: inclement weather, improper swimming attire and/or expulsion for disciplinary reasons.

  6. Children 11 and under entering the pool must be within sight and accompanied by a responsible person 16 years of age or older in appropriate swim attire (children 12 years of age and over are allowed to enter by themselves).

  7. Non-swimmers and all children age five (5) and under in the water must be directly supervised by a responsible person 16 years of age or older in appropriate swim attire.

  8. Use of the baby pool (outdoor) shall be limited to children five years of age or under and their parent or guardian. Supervision of children in the pool is the responsibility of the adult bringing them into the pool enclosure. Children must not be left unattended.

  9. Food or refreshments may be consumed only in the observation area and indoor or outdoor vending areas. All refuse and waste papers must be deposited in designated receptacles.

  10. Groups of children entering the pool must be directly supervised by an adult, with one adult for every five children.

  11. Groups of 15 people or more must have prior approval before entering the facilit

  12. The Recreation Department is NOT RESPONSIBLE for personal property left on the pool deck, in the Fitness Center, or in the locker room.

  13. Pool patrons are responsible for their own valuables. Lockers are available; patrons must bring their own locks. Valuables may not be checked with the cashiers, pool or fitness staff.

  14. Patrons who wish to enter into the pool areas and/or Fitness Center must pay an admission fee. (This includes anyone who does not wish to swim.)

  15. Pets are not permitted in the facility. An exception will be made for a seeing-eye dog for the visually impaired.

  16. Glass containers are not permitted in the facility.

  17. Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the Indoor/Outdoor Pools or Fitness wing facilities.

  18. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are not permitted in the facility. Persons under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted in the facility or in the surrounding areas.

  19. No person shall conduct themselves in the pool facilities in such a manner as to jeopardize the safety and health of themselves and others. The use of abusive or profane language shall be grounds for expulsion.

  20. Loitering will not be permitted on the pool grounds or within the facility.

  21. Prior to entering the facility, any patron having a special disability must inform the Management of his physical condition.

  22. Any injury occurring in the facility must be reported to the Pool Staff.

  23. The front desk/office telephone and public address equipment may be used only to deliver messages of an emergency nature.

  24. Employees are the only persons allowed in the staff room, filter room, mechanical room, storage rooms, offices, and behind front and guard desk.



  1. All patrons are asked to take a cleansing soap shower before entering the deck area. Sun bathers SHOULD shower before each entrance into the water in order to rinse off perspiration, lotions, and zinc oxide, etc.

  2. Any person having a skin disease, sore or inflamed eyes, cold, nasal or ear discharge, communicable disease, or who is wearing any kind of bandage or band-aid will not be permitted in the pools.

  3. Persons having any considerable area of exposed sub-skin tissues, open blisters, cuts, sunburn, etc., are warned that these are likely to become infected. Such persons should not use the pools.

  4. Running, boisterous or rough play, pushing, acrobatics (including flips), dunking, wrestling, splashing, yelling, diving or jumping haphazardly, snapping of towels, improper conduct causing undue disturbances in or about the pool areas or any acts which would endanger any patron are prohibited.

  5. Spitting, spouting of water, blowing nose or urinating in the pools is prohibited.

  6. Prolonged underwater swimming for distance or breathing exercises are not permitted for safety reasons.

  7. Non-swimmers must remain in the shallow water (chest deep or less).

  8. Toys, balls, inner tubes, inflated boats and rafts are not permitted in the main pools, except during designated pre-school playtime hours. Inflated toys must be used in the outdoor baby pool only.

  9. Street clothes and shoes are not permitted on the pool decks.

  10. The pools may be cleared, at the discretion of the management; of all youths seventeen years of age and under for fifteen minutes on the hour for an adult swim and/or rest period. Children under 5 five years of age or under may enter the water accompanied by an adult at this time.

  11. Single groups shall not monopolize a particular area of the pool and thereby limit its use by other patrons. Only Recreation Department activities or team activities are permitted as scheduled. Private group uses are not permitted during a Recreation Swim period and must be scheduled as a rental. No activity for private gain is permitted at any time.

  12. Bathers must wear swimming suits or swimming trunks. Thong suits, gym shorts, cut- offs, body suits and other makeshift suits are not permitted. Proper swim attire must be maintained at all times at the discretion of the Aquatic Supervisor or his designee. Mesh or nylon materials may be worn over a bathing suit. Solid white T-shirts may be worn for medical reasons but first must be sanctioned by the Management.

  13. Guards have the authority to enforce all pool rules. Patrons who repeatedly violate the rules will be asked to leave the facility.

  14. Wearing eyeglasses in the pool is discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

  15. Gum chewing is not permitted in the pool, deck area, or locker room.

    LAP SWIMMING **Please Keep Off Lane Ropes**

  1. Lanes in the main pool may be roped off for lap swimming. Other water exercise should be performed in the open space outside of the lap lanes when lap swimmers are waiting for a lane.

  2. When using circle swim in a lane with more than 2 people, swimmers should stay on the right side of the lane (next to the lane rope) and pass in the middle.

  3. Lap swimmers should arrange themselves by speed in the lanes. Please consult the directions posted or ask a lifeguard.

  4. Youths who show evidence of being serious lap swimmers may be granted permission by the manager to swim laps in the lap lanes during general swim or lap swimming times.

    **Approved by Prince George’s County Health Department**

  1. The hydrotherapy pool use is restricted to adults 18 and older.

  2. Fifteen minutes of each hour is the maximum time permitted in this pool.

  3. Pregnant women or bathers with a history of heart disease, diabetes or circulatory problems should not use this pool.

  4. Any swimmer with an infectious disease, nasal or ear discharge, exposed sub-skin tissue, or wearing a bandage may not use this pool.

  5. All patrons are asked take a cleansing shower before using the hot tub.

  6. No more than 24 persons permitted in the hot tub at one time.

  7. For safety reasons, we ask that patrons refrain from lying or exercising on the top level of the Hot Tub

  8. Report any abuse or improper conduct to the Management.


  1. All persons use the Fitness Wing at their own risk.

  2. Entrance restricted to patrons 14 years of age and older. Children are not permitted in the Fitness Wing.

  3. Appropriate exercise dress is required. Athletic shoes and shirts must be worn at all times. Bathing Suits, Jeans, Dresses or Dress Clothing are NOT PERMITTED.

  4. No food or drinks allowed, except water in re-sealable plastic bottles.

  5. All exercisers should consult with a physician prior to any exercise routines.

  6. The use of aerobic equipment is 30 minutes per exerciser, when others are waiting.

  7. Black soled shoes are not permitted in the aerobic classroom.

  8. Please allow other exercisers to 'work-in' on the weight equipment between sets.

  9. Patrons must bring a towel to wipe off equipment after use.

  1. Only Coast Guard Approved personal flotation devices(PFD’s)are permitted. All generic swimming aids are prohibited. We reserve the right to inspect your PFD.

  2. Kickboard use is restricted to lap lanes only.

  3. During storms the outdoor pool will be closed and the entire area cleared at the discretion of the Management. The pool will normally open thirty (30) minutes after the storm has passed.

  4. Headphones must be worn when listening to radios, "boom" boxes, compact disc players, etc.

  5. Patrons are NOT PERMITTED to leave locks on lockers overnight. All locks will be cut off and locker contents will be placed into Lost and Found. Recreation Department is NOT RESPONSIBLE for personal property in the Lost and Found.

  6. Children who need to wear diapers must have tight fitting rubber pants with elastic waist and legs over the diaper, and a bathing suit on. These include all forms of cloth, disposable and “swim” diapers.
